* Geology presentation on Thursday.

Raymond Wiggers, author of Geology Underfoot in Illinois, will talk about "Coal Swamps, Coral Reefs, and Continental Glaciers: A Look at Prairie-State Geology" at 7:00 p.m. this Thursday (October 21), in the Library's meeting room. The presentation features slides and audience participation, and all ages are welcome. To learn more about the geology and plants of the midwest, visit Mr. Wiggers' website.

* Library Elf alert service.

As an optional convenience, Homer Township Library cardholders may now register with Library Elf, a service run by a private company that allows you to:

  • Receive email notices before items are due.
  • View due dates in a convenient calendar format.
  • Consolidate information for all of the family's library cards.
  • ... and more.

To sign up with Library Elf, click here and follow the instructions. Select "HAL - Heritage Automated Libraries (IL)" as your library. If you haven't changed your PIN, it should be the last four digits of your library card barcode number.

Important: The operator of Library Elf is not affiliated with Homer Township Public Library, and you use Library Elf at your own option and risk. Users of Library Elf are required to submit personal information, including library card barcodes and PINs, to people outside the Library. Please read Library Elf's privacy policy and FAQ before deciding to sign up for the service.

* It's science fair time!

Are you starting to work on your science fair project? With a Homer Township library card, you can search encyclopedias, magazine articles, and science news in the Find It Online area of our Web site. Here are a few other good sites for science fair research:

* Voter registration ends Tuesday.

October 5 is the last day to register to vote in the November 2 election. To register, you must be a U.S. citizen who will be at least 18 years old on election day. Will County residents may register at the Library by presenting two forms of identification (at least one i.d. with your current address). We're open from 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. today and Tuesday.

* Read With Rex returns!

Young visitors to the Library may build their reading skills by sharing a book out loud with a canine companion on Sunday, October 10, 4:30-7:30 p.m. Kids can gain confidence by reading to a patient, non-judgmental, trained therapy animal. For this session of Read With Rex, the dogs will be in costume! Registration is not required.

* Art week at the Library.

In celebration of Illinois Art Week (October 4-8), a special exhibit of works by members of the Lemont Artists' Guild is on display near the new books and magazines. Guild members will be demonstrating their talents at the Library on October 6 and 7, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
