* Countdown to Harry Potter 6.

July 16 is the release date for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the 6th book in the series. Our copies aren't listed in our catalog yet, but you can still get on the waiting list. Click here, and then click the blue Place Hold button you'll see on the left. To add yourself to the list, enter your 14-digit library card barcode number -- without spaces -- and your PIN. (If you haven't changed your PIN, it should be the last 4 digits of your barcode number.) If you have trouble signing yourself up, let us know, and we'll take care of you.

Here are a few other books that Harry Potter fans might like (click on the links to see which books are available or to place a request):

Eragon, by Christopher Paolini.

Stravaganza series, by Mary Hoffman.

Ravenscliff series, by Geoffrey Huntington.

Magyk, by Angie Sage.

For more reading suggestions, take a look at NoveList (library card barcode number required), browse through this great list of Harry Potter read-alikes from a library in Maine, or ask us!

If you're looking for facts and trivia, the Morton Grove Public Library's Unofficial Guide to Harry Potter lists characters, creature, food, quotes, and more info from the first 5 books.

* Summer registration starts Monday.

Registration for our Summer Reading Club (cardholders of all ages are invited to read books for chances to win prizes), Practice Pals (teens coach younger kids in reading and math skills), and children's craft and nature activities (see our calendar for details) begins at 8:30 a.m. on June 13.

The Summer Reading Club runs through July 23, and this year's theme is Superheroes. Incentive prizes will be awarded to all participants. Look for special displays of reading suggestions in the Library throughout the summer.

We'll have two live family presentations at Schilling School near the end of Summer Reading: Superhero Dogs (July 20, 7:00 p.m.) and Circus Boy (July 27, 10:00 a.m.). Free tickets for both shows will be available starting July 1.

* Last week for ReferenceUSA access.

Because of changes we need to make in the Library's budget allocations, we are not renewing our subscription to the ReferenceUSA business and residential directory database. June 15 will be our last day for ReferenceUSA. We regret that this resource will no longer be available to cardholders through our site.

* Puppet show moved.

Our presentation of the Jan's Clan Puppet Show on Thursday morning has been moved to Hadley Middle School, 15731 S. Bell Road. Free tickets for this 10:00 a.m. performance are still available at our front desk. (If you already have tickets, just go to Hadley instead of Schilling School for the show.)

* New! Online genealogy library.

If you're working on a family tree and have a Homer library card, take a look at our newest key online resource: HeritageQuest. HeritageQuest is an electronic library of U.S. Census data, published family and local histories, and other documents.

To search HeritageQuest, go to our Find It Online! page and click the HeritageQuest logo. All of our online sources may also be used on computers in the Library, even if you don't have a library card with us.

Note: Due to budget constraints and lack of online access for cardholders, we no longer subscribe to AncestryPlus. (Now called AncestryLibrary.)
