"Pirates!: The true and remarkable adventures of Minerva Sharp and Nancy Kington, female pirates"
by Celia Rees
What is better than a good story of pirates? Mix in a couple of young woman who dress and work as men on a pirate ship.
Key to the story is Danger, Suspense and Intrigue!
The True Story of Hansel and Gretel, by Louise Murphy (adult fiction)
The author takes a few elements of the classic fairy tale -- a father and stepmother, children lost in the woods, a witch with a large oven -- and twists and shapes them into a powerful story about the Holocaust.
While running from the Nazis in Poland, a brother and sister are sent off on their own, as their best chance to escape and survive. After separating from their children, the father and stepmother meet up with a group of underground resistance fighters.
This book has some very gruesome and disturbing parts, but that's understandable, considering the subject matter. My only complaint about the story is that there are some unbelievable coincidences at the end.
"My Secret War: The Diary of Madeline Beck"
This is an excellent, and in my opinion, the best Dear America novel there is. Maddie is a thirteen year-old girl living during world war two. She lives with her mother at a boardinghouse in Long Island while her father is in the Navy, stationed in the Pacific. This story blends just enough historical details with believable aspects of a young teenager's life to make it a very compelling read. I would recommend this book to anyone starting to become interested in historical fiction.
"Girl With a Pearl Earring"
This book can really appeal to almost any interest- art lovers, history buffs, and even feminists! Set in 17th century Netherlands, this book tells the story of a teenage girl named Griet who has to work for a higher society family in order to help support her family.
Across the Nightingale Floor
After Takeo’s village is destroyed, he finds a home with Lord Otori Shigeru. Shigeru has many enemies and wants Takeo to help defeat them. It turns out that Takeo has special talents and maybe the only one who can cross the Nightingale floor that protects Shigeru’s biggest enemy.
This story is part adventure, part historical fiction, and part love story. You will not want to put this book down! I can’t wait for the next book to come out!
Hachicko Waits is a true story about a dog in Japan. Everyday, the dog waits at the train station for his master to come home. One day, the master did not come home on the train. The master had died suddenly at work. Hachicko did not understand that the master died. He decided to come back everyday to look for his master. This book is for little kids. I only read it because my brother had it checked out.
Blood Red Horse by K.M. Grant. This book takes place during the Crusades. Will is the main character but other characters feelings and emotions are portrayed in different parts of the novel. The blood red horse is a magnificient animal that has connected all of the characters in the novel. This is a book to read even if you are not interested in the time period.
crispin at the edge of the world by avi
If you loved the first book, Crispin, you need to read this book to find out what happens to Crispin and Bear. Not as great as the first book but if you are dying to know what happens, it is a must read.
