* Food-For-Fines in November.

Pay off your library fines with food instead of cash! During November, bring in 1 can of food and we'll waive $1.00 of your library fines. That's right ...

One food item = $1.00 in fines

Up to $20.00 in overdue fines will be waived for each donation from the following list of acceptable items:
  • 8 oz. or more can of fruits or vegetables
  • 6 oz or more can of meat, fish, or poultry
  • 10.5 oz. or more can of soup (no packaged soup mix)
  • 1 box pasta, rice or dried beans
  • 12 oz. or more box of cereal
  • 8 oz. or more jar of peanut butter
Please note:
  • Only non-perishable, undamaged, unexpired, and labeled items will be accepted.
  • Bring food to the Circulation Desk during library hours.
  • Food will be accepted for fines on returned items only, not for replacement fees of lost items.
  • All food donated during the drive will be given to local food banks for distribution.
  • Additional donations are welcome.
Questions? Ask at the Circulation Desk or call us at 708-301-7908.

* Will County book recycling this weekend.

With a few exceptions (e.g., current bestsellers or paperback novels in like-new condition), we're currently not able to accept book donations at the Library. However, we want you to know about this weekend's Book Reuse and Recycle Event at Pilcher Park in Joliet.

The Waste Services Division of Will County's Land Use Department is sponsoring this collection. "Gently used" books may be dropped off at the Pilcher Park Nature Center (enter on Gougar Road, north of U.S. 30) October 27-29, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

You can also browse through the sorted books at the event for good reads to take home!

For more information, contact the Waste Services Division at 815-727-8834.

* Grimm's Grimmest.

Get into the Halloween spirit with our special program, Grimm's Grimmest: The Darker Side of Fairy Tales. This program challenges the popular, modern versions of fairy tales by reinstating the original gothic tales long before the stories were edited in the Victorian era. For example, what happened after Sleeping Beauty is awakened by the Prince's kiss? Most people believe they lived happily ever after, but this was far from the truth or intent of the original tale. Find out more through this innovative program. This program is intended for older children, teens, and adults. Funded by a Road Scholars grant from the Illinois Humanities Council.
The presentation is scheduled for this Saturday (October 14), at 1:00 pm.

* Author Fair.

We're hosting an Author Fair on Tuesday, October 17. There will be eight authors at the event to meet and converse with patrons. Each author also has a short presentation scheduled. Authors will have copies of their books for sale and will happily sign copies. This is a great chance to purchase some new reading material! Join us for refreshments, raffles, presentations, and great conversation!
