Press Release - Energy

The first "Energy: A Teen Leadership Academy" is coming to an end. The program was a huge success! The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) has recognized Energy in their Excellence in Library Service to Young Adults Recognition Project. The library will be awarded $250 and the program will be featured in the fifth edition of Excellence in Library Service to Young Adults. The money awarded will be used to host a speaker for next year's Energy program.

Energy is a teen leadership academy. The academy aims to help create youth leaders who will assume leadership roles throughout the community. This year's Energy teens had the option to attend fourteen different events. The most popular sessions were "Tips from a Pro: Preparing for College" presented by Robert Walton from Elmhurst College and "Wired!" presented by Brian Smith from Prairie Area Library System. Energy teens also volunteered at the library, helping to run the Summer Reading Program. They staffed the summer reading desk and assisted in programs such as Book Buddies, Girl's Night Out, and Spy Academy.

Restaurants throughout the Homer Glen area provided donations for several of the Energy programs. Food sponsors included Aurelio's Pizza, Chesdan's Pizzeria, Enzo's Pizza, Pizza Mia and Pepe's.

Next year's Energy program is tentatively scheduled to begin in February 2008. Applications will be available 30 days before the start date.
