ADULTS & SENIORS

Healthy Eating -- Tuesday, September 29th at 7pm
Interested in living a healthier lifestyle? Start by learning how to improve your diet with El Chef Michael Niksic's Healthy Eating presentation. This program covers a wide range of ideas and methods to improve your diet and eating habits in a reasonable and straightforward manner.

Mystery Book Club -- Monday, October 5th at 7pm
The Mystery Book Club will be discussing A Rule Against Murder by Louise Penny. We are a welcoming, lively group, and mystery lovers are always welcome to join in on the fun! Books are available at the library for check-out the month before the meeting.

Most Haunted Locations of Illinois -- Monday, October 5th at 7pm
Chad Lewis, co-author of the Illinois Road Guide to Haunted Locations, will take you on a ghostly journey to some of the most haunted places in Illinois! From phantom creatures prowling the woods to graveyard apparitions located in your own backyard, no place in Illinois is without its own haunting. Registration preferred.

College Planning Workshop -- Tuesday, October 6th at 7pm
College Funding Strategies will host a free college planning workshop for parents of high school students who are looking at increased college tuition. This session concentrates on helping your high school student pick the right college while causing the least impact on your family's finances. Registration preferred.

Armchair Travelers: Thailand -- Friday, October 9th at 1:30pm
Explore the faces and places of Thailand with Bill Helmuth in this exciting program. Visit Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and more, stopping at Buddhist temples, flower markets, and exquisite palaces along the way. Light refreshments will be served.

TEENS

Teen Open House -- Wednesday, September 30th from 5-8pm
The library's Teen Open House is quickly approaching! The event, for teens in 6th grade and up, will be held on Wednesday, September 30th from 5 - 8pm. Activities including raffles, gaming, and a photo scavenger hunt will be held throughout the night, so stay the whole night or drop-in at any time! We'll also be having a food fear factor contest (with a signed parental consent form/waiver) -- we encourage those with food allergies to take their allergies into consideration before choosing to participate, although if you decide to participate and have food allergies, please turn in your signed consent form/waiver by September 29th so that we may accommodate you. Hungry teens can decorate their own sweet treats from 5-6pm and indulge in pizza at 7pm while listening to the songs of local teen band Carnival Heist. Teen Book Discussion -- Tuesday, October 6th at 7pm
We'll be discussing The Compound by S.A. Bodeen at our next Teen Book Club meeting. With a nuclear bomb heading their way, Eli and his family retreat into an underground compound to live for 15 years. But as the years pass, Eli becomes suspicious of his father, which leads him to wonder: who has been sabotaging the compound, and what is really left outside in the real world? Books are available at the library, and new members are welcome! For teens in 6th grade and up.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting -- Thursday, October 8th at 7pm
Teens in grades 9-12 are invited to attend the library's Teen Advisory Board meetings! We'll be discussing ideas for upcoming programs and projects. Members will receive volunteer hours for attending TAB meetings.

KIDS

Judy Moody Program -- Thursday, October 1st at 6pm
Kids in grades 2 - 4 are invited to make a Judy Moody inspired craft, eat snacks and enjoy a short character book discussion. Reading a Judy Moody book is suggested before the program date. Space is limited and registration is required.

Bookmobile Fall Coloring Contest -- September 28 - October 7
Visit the Bookmobile and enter the Bookmobile's Fall coloring contest for your chance to win 'smencils' and puzzle erasers!

Halloween Costume Swap -- Thursday, October 8th from 3:30 - 7pm
The Homer Library is hosting our first Halloween Costume Swap on Thursday, October 8th from 3:30 - 7pm! Costumes and accessories are now being accepted through October 7th (you can see a sampling of donated items hanging at the entrance to the children's department!). For every gently-used costume you donate, you will receive a ticket to shop the Costume Swap. For a complete list of details, please click here!

Culture Club: Greece -- Saturday, October 10th from 10-12pm
Calling all kids in grades 2-5! Travel to faraway lands and explore foods and customs from other countries around the world. First stop: Greece! We'll experience its many charms, architecture, and landscape. Space is limited and registration is required. (Can't make this program? Culture Club will be visiting Antarctica on November 7th, and registration is open now!)

Banned Books Week
Banned Books Week, which runs from September 26th through October 3rd, is an annual event sponsored by the American Library Association. The Homer Library is highlighting BBW with a display of challenged and banned books from around the country. We are also handing out BBW bookmarks, while supplies last. So visit the display and "celebrate your right to read!" For more information on how area libraries (including the Homer Library!) are highlighting Banned Books Week, you can read this article in the Southtown Star.

Author Fair
The Homer Library is excited to announce that our 4th Annual Author Fair will be held at the library on Monday, October 19th from 7-9pm. Meet the people behind the stories! Throughout the night, local authors will give short talks discussing their books, writing methods, and/or publication process. All authors will have tables throughout the library, at which they will sell and sign their books and also answer questions from patrons. Authors of childrens, teen, and adult books will be at the Author Fair: Norm Cowie, Carolyn Crimi, Philip Kledzik, George Kulles, Lisa Mallen, Helen Osterman, Sheila A. Welch, and Cheryl Woodson. This event is a true celebration of reading and writing, so we hope to see you there!

* Kids Art Club: First Session Cancelled

We regret to announce that the first session of the Kids Art Club, scheduled for Saturday, September 26th, has been cancelled. We encourage interested parents to register their children (in 3rd to 6th grade) for the remaining two sessions, to be held on Thursday, November 12th and Monday, December 7th. Kids will learn fun facts about some of the world's greatest artists and use their imagination to create their own masterpiece to display in the library! No artistic ability necessary! Chick Lit Book Discussion -- Tuesday, September 22nd at 7pm
Did you read Mia King's Sweet Life? If so, stop by this month's meeting of the Chick Lit Book Discussion! Books are available at the library for check out, and new members are always welcome.

Reverse Mortgage Seminar -- Wednesday, September 23rd at 7pm
Gene Mundt, a certified Reverse Mortgage Specialist, will discuss both the benefits and disadvantages of reverse mortgages. The program is open to seniors and other adults interested in learning more about this type of loan.

Look out! It's the first project of our teen craft series! Stop by the library anytime between 4 - 5:30pm to make some funky magnets for the fridge or your locker. All projects not finished by 5:30pm can be taken home or completed at the next teen craft day. Bring your friends & get crafty! For teens in 6th grade and up.

Teen Manga Group -- Thursday, September 17th at 7pm
The library's Teen Manga Group is now a member of Operation Anime, so we'll be watching some anime and eating popcorn! Open to teens in 6th grade and up.

Cooking @ Your Library / Fright Night @ Your Library
The Homer Library is hosting two series of adult and teen programming this Fall! The first series, Cooking @ Your Library, consists of four fantastic programs for foodies! El Chef Michael Niksic returns to the library for these events: Healthy Eating (September 29th), Chocolate Chocolate (October 14th), International Cheese (November 17th), and Jellies and Jams (December 8th). Each program begins at 7pm. Chef's Niksic's programs are both delicious and popular, so space is limited and registration for each program is required.

Our second series is entitled Fright Night @ Your Library! Learn about the Most Haunted Locations of Illinois (October 5th), uncover the mysteries of vampires in Vampire 101 (October 27th), and witness dramatic readings of Creepy Classics (October 29th)! Each program begins at 7pm. Registration for the Fright Night programs, which are open to adults and teens, is preferred! Prairiesmoke Writers Group -- Wednesday, September 9th at 7pm
Stop by the monthly meeting of the library's writers group to meet the group's new writing facilitator! You're also invited to discuss your work with other writers and have fun with some group writing assignments. New members are welcome! Writers of all levels are encouraged to attend. Registration is not required.

Armchair Travelers: 7 Modern Wonders of the World -- Friday, September 11th at 1:30pm
Bill Helmuth will take you on a tour of the 7 Modern Wonders of the World. From the Taj Mahal to the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, Bill has visited each of the 7 Modern Wonders and will share a unique perspective on these monumental masterpieces.

Fall Newsletter & Program Sign-Up: Monday, Sept. 14th
The Fall newsletter has arrived! Inside you will find information on the upcoming programs at the library and on the bookmobile. Copies of the newsletter are available at the library and bookmobile, and will also be included in the September 10th edition of the Homer Horizon. But you can also click here to read it from home! In-person registration for all programs begins on Monday, September 14th at 8:30 am, and telephone registration begins at noon on that same day. We hope to see you and your family at a program soon!

Teen Open House

Now Open Sundays!
The library is now open on Sundays again! Visit us anytime between 4-8pm Sundays (except holidays) from now through Memorial Day. All regular library services are available!

New Database: Reference USA
The library now subscribes to Reference USA, a database for researching business and residental information. To access this database, go to www.referenceusa.com and type in your Homer Library card number (without any spaces). If you need help with logging on or searching, please contact the library's Reference Department!

* Library Closed: Monday, September 7th

In observance of Labor Day, the library will be closed on Monday, September 7th. Bookmobile service will also be suspended for the day. We will reopen Tuesday morning at 8:30 am.

And as a reminder, the library will be open on Sundays from 4-8 pm beginning Sunday, September 13th!

When the library is closed, you can still:

+ chat online with a librarian through our ASKAWAY service
+ use our library databases
+ search our catalog.
