ADULTS & SENIORS

Creepy Classics -- Thursday, October 29th at 7pm
Join us for dramatic readings of the best of 200 years of spooky writing, from classic to horror to modern suspense -- stories of ghosts and gunmen, monsters and madmen, and deals with the devil. Stories include: "The Monkey's Paw," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," and more. Registration preferred.

International Cheese -- Monday, November 2nd at 7pm (please note new date!)
El Chef Michael Niksic will introduce you to domestic & imported, familiar & new cheese types. The various serving styles, uses, storage, and handling will be discussed, with a tasting to follow. Registration required.

TEENS

YAC Meeting -- Wednesday, October 28th at 4:30pm
We'll be making a sweet treat for Halloween! New members are welcome to come and learn more about the library's Youth Advisory Committee! For teens in grades 5-8.

Teen Book Club -- Tuesday, November 3rd at 7pm
Join us for a discussion of The Awakening by Robin Wasserman. For teens in 6th grade and up. New members are welcome!

New Moon Party -- Thursday, November 6th at 7pm
Get ready for the release of the New Moon movie in theaters! Celebrate Bella's 18th brithday with cake, trivia, and a craft. For teens in 6th - 12th grade. Registration required.

KIDS

Culture Club: Antarctica -- Saturday, November 7th from 10am - noon
Take a journey to the bottom of the world as we visit Antarctica and explore its foods and customs. For children in grades 2-5. Space is limited and registration is required.

Bookmobile Halloween Costume Contest
Dress up for the 3rd Annual Bookmobile Halloween Costume Contest from October 19th - 31st. Prizes will be awarded for the best, funniest, scariest, and most original costumes!

Databases for Job Searching and Resume Building
Did you know that Homer Library patrons have access to databases that can assist those who are searching for a new job? The Learning Express Library database offers self paced tutorials on topics such as job searching skills, creating resume and cover letters, and interviewing. Users can also find career information and practice tests for a variety of occupations. The Coin Career Library database offers a simple resumer builder and information such as average Illinois salaries and occupational outlooks. To access these (and other!) library databases, click on the "Find It Online!" link located in the column on the left side of the library's home page, or just click here! Users may need their library barcode number (found on the back of your Homer Library card) to access these databases from home. Have questions about the library's databases? Author Fair -- Monday, October 19th at 7pm
Meet the people behind the stories at the library's 4th annual Author Fair! Throughout the night, local authors will give short talks discussing their books, writing methods, and/or publication process. All authors will have tables throughout the library, at which they will sell and sign their books and also answer questions from patrons. Authors of childrens, teen, and adult books will be at the Author Fair: Norm Cowie, Carolyn Crimi, Philip Kledzik, George Kulles, Lisa Mallen, Helen Osterman, Sheila Welch, and Cheryl Woodson. This event is a true celebration of reading and writing, so we hope to see you there!

Adult Book Discussion -- Wednesday, October 21st at 7:30pm
Join us as we discuss The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. The Adult Book Discussion Group is always a great time, so come join in the fun! New members are welcome!

Clicker Canines -- Saturday, October 24th at 2pm
Patricia Calderone will host a seminar on clicker dog training. She'll cover eliminating unwanted behavior and building puppy perfect behavior. No dogs allowed, please! Registration required.

Vampire 101 -- Tuesday, October 27th at 7pm
Martin V. Riccardo, author of Vampires Unearthed and The Lure of the Vampire, will examine the mysteries of the vampire in legend, film, fantasy, and fact. Registration preferred.

Chick Lit Book Discussion -- Tuesday, October 27th at 7pm
Join us for a discussion of Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos. Books are available at the library for check-out. New members are welcome!

At the next Teen Drop-In Craft session, we'll be making awesome cell phone charms! Stop by any time between 4 - 5:30pm. All projects not finished by 5:30pm can be taken home or completed at the next teen craft day. For teens in 6th grade and up.

Celebrate Halloween with a spooky kids craft! Kids are invited to make a ghost or witch craft. There is a $3 fee per child, and kids younger than 6 will need assistance from their parent or guardian. Space is limited and registration is required. To register, call (708) 301-7908.

Teen Read Week
October 18th marked the first day of Teen Read Week! Sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association, Teen Read Week has been encouraging teen reading since 1998. To celebrate, teens in grades 6-12 can check-out a YA book and then stop by the Reference Desk for a treat pack! Also this week, teens can attend the Teen Movie and Drop-In Craft (more information on both events is listed above). We also encourage teens who haven't seen our new Teen Area to stop by to browse our new YA books and spend some time in the new comfy chairs! For more information on Teen Read Week, click here!

Stop by the monthly meeting of the library's writers group! You're invited to discuss your work with other writers and have fun with some group writing assignments. New members are welcome! Writers of all levels are encouraged to attend. Registration is not required.

Stop by the library any time between 4 - 5:30pm to recycle those juice boxes and Capri Sun pouches into a cute purse! Sewing is required. All projects not finished by 5:30pm can be taken home or completed at the next teen craft day. Bring your friends & get crafty! For teens in 6th grade and up. While this craft is a drop-in, we encourage registration so that we can ensure that we have enough supplies. To register call (708) 301-7908 or email Heather at hcolby@homerlibrary.org.

Teens in 6th grade and up are invited to attend the library's Teen Manga Group meetings. We'll be discussing manga and anime, and planning activities for future meetings. New members are welcome.

* Citizens Utility Board Phone Bill Clinic

The CUB Phone Bill Clinic scheduled for October 19th at the Homer Township Public Library will be postponed until November 16th @ 7 pm. Mystery Book Club -- Monday, October 5th at 7pm
The Mystery Book Club will be discussing A Rule Against Murder by Louise Penny. We are a welcoming, lively group, and mystery lovers are always welcome to join in on the fun! Books are available at the library for check-out the month before the meeting.

Most Haunted Locations of Illinois -- Monday, October 5th at 7pm
Chad Lewis, co-author of the Illinois Road Guide to Haunted Locations, will take you on a ghostly journey to some of the most haunted places in Illinois! From phantom creatures prowling the woods to graveyard apparitions located in your own backyard, no place in Illinois is without its own haunting. Registration preferred.

College Planning Workshop -- Tuesday, October 6th at 7pm
College Funding Strategies will host a free college planning workshop for parents of high school students who are looking at increased college tuition. This session concentrates on helping your high school student pick the right college while causing the least impact on your family's finances. Registration preferred.

Armchair Travelers: Thailand -- Friday, October 9th at 1:30pm
Explore the faces and places of Thailand with Bill Helmuth in this exciting program. Visit Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and more, stopping at Buddhist temples, flower markets, and exquisite palaces along the way. Light refreshments will be served.

We'll be discussing The Compound by S.A. Bodeen at our next Teen Book Club meeting. With a nuclear bomb heading their way, Eli and his family retreat into an underground compound to live for 15 years. But as the years pass, Eli becomes suspicious of his father, which leads him to wonder: who has been sabotaging the compound, and what is really left outside in the real world? Books are available at the library, and new members are welcome! For teens in 6th grade and up.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting -- Thursday, October 8th at 7pm
Teens in grades 9-12 are invited to attend the library's Teen Advisory Board meetings! We'll be discussing ideas for upcoming programs and projects. Members will receive volunteer hours for attending TAB meetings.

The Homer Library is hosting our first Halloween Costume Swap on Thursday, October 8th from 3:30 - 7pm! Costumes and accessories are now being accepted through October 7th (you can see a sampling of donated items hanging at the entrance to the children's department!). For every gently-used costume you donate, you will receive a ticket to shop the Costume Swap. For a complete list of details, please click here!

Culture Club: Greece -- Saturday, October 10th from 10-12pm
Calling all kids in grades 2-5! Travel to faraway lands and explore foods and customs from other countries around the world. First stop: Greece! We'll experience its many charms, architecture, and landscape. Space is limited and registration is required. (Can't make this program? Culture Club will be visiting Antarctica on November 7th, and registration is open now!).

Teen Open House: An Update!
Our Teen Open House party, held to celebrate the library's official opening of the new teen area, was a great success! Teens filled the library all night to decorate cupcakes and cookies, to participate in or watch the grossness of Teen Food Fear Factor (although many teens made it to the final round, Clarke finished the "cat vomit" quicker than everyone else in order to win the competition!), to win prizes and eat pizza, and to rock out to the songs of local band Carnival Heist! We'd like to thank the sponsors of the Teen Open House: Aurelio's Pizza, Cardinal Fitness, Carnival Heist, Chesdan's Pizzeria, Costco, Creamery, Jewel, Nancy's Pizza, and Pepe's!
