Presented by Lisa O'Toole, Assistant Professor of Communications at Lewis University in Romeoville.

Teen Book Club -- Tuesday, May 4th at 7pm
Teens in 6th grade and up are invited to join in the discussion of James Dashner's The Maze Runner. We are a fun group and new members are always welcome!

Teen Craft -- Thursday, April 29th from 6-8pm
Paint an egg pot (What's an egg pot? It's a small planter shaped like an egg! Trust us, it's cute!) and plant some seeds to create the beginnings of your own future garden! For teens in grades 6 & up. Space is limited & registration is required. To register, call (708) 301-7908.

We are into the second week of Chick It Out! Drop by the library to take a peek at the incubated eggs, or you can view the live feed from home at our website! When do you think the eggs will hatch? The Chicks Are Coming: Tuesday, April 20th

Chick it out! Don't miss the special delivery of the eggs at the library on April 20th! You can view the eggs in the incubator or view our 24 hour live webcam from our webpage. The Homer Library would like to thank the University of Illinois Extension Will County Unit for providing the eggs and special delivery, the will County Farm Bureau for providing the incubator, and Learning Express (Homer Glen) for contest prizes.

UPCOMING! Iron Oaks Teambuilding Session, May 22nd, 9-11am OR 11-1pm
Join us for a series of fun teambuilding challenges with other teens! We'll be doing a series of activities that require teamwork, trust, communication, and problem-solving skills (kind of like the TV show Survivor, without being stuck on an island). This event will be held outdoors (weather permitting). Presented by Iron Oaks Environmental Learning Center. Waivers must be signed by a parent or guardian, so advance registration is required.

National Library Week Fine Forgiveness: April 11-17th
To celebrate National Library Week, from April 11-17th the Homer Township Library will offer amnesty on fines. Fines will be waived on all overdue items belonging to the Homer Township Public Library District. Patrons can discreetly return items in the book drops outside even when the library is closed. The goals of this program include: getting long overdue items back, bringing missing patrons back into the library, and making items available for other people. Late fees up to $20.00 will be forgiven during the week. Amnesty does not apply to lost or damaged items or out-of-system interlibrary loan items.

Chick It Out!: The Eggs Are Coming!
The Homer Library is excited to announce Chick It Out, a unique library event featuring the incubation and hatching of live chicks! Beginning April 20th, patrons can visit the library to see the eggs in the incubator or view our 24 hour live webcam from our website. Patrons can also participate in programs celebrating Chick It Out!, including these eggs-cellent events:

4/20: The arrival of the eggs! Don't miss the special delivery! An exact time of delivery will be announced in the next few days.
4/20: All ages kids chick craft at 4:30pm. Make a chick card!
4/27: Chick Lit Book Discussion for adults at 7pm.
4/29: Drop in teen craft (for teens in 6th grade & up) from 6-8pm. Make an eggs-traordinary egg pot!
5/2: Family Movie Event at 4:30pm. Come enjoy a movie and popcorn!

National Library Week Fine Forgiveness

In celebration of National Library Week, the Homer Library is offering amnesty of overdue fines on checked out items during the week of April 11-17. Return any overdue items during this week and fines will be forgiven up to $20. Chick It Out!
The Homer Library is excited to announce Chick It Out, a unique library event featuring the incubation and hatching of live chicks! Beginning April 20th, patrons can visit the library to see the eggs in the incubator or view our 24 hour live webcam from our website. Energy: A Teen Leadership Academy; Application Deadline Approaching!
More programs are being added to the schedule for this year's session of Energy: A Teen Leadership Academy! We are excited to have additional programs for Energy teens to attend and we'll be announcing them soon. To apply for Energy, interested teens can pick one up at the library or print one out from home by clicking here. This award-winning academy aims to help create youth leaders who will assume leadership roles throughout the community. Teens will commit to attending three library programs (on topics such as college preparation and communication skills) and fulfill a service requirement at the library. Participation in this academy will look impressive on college applications and resumes, and it's also fun! Energy teens will also get priority regarding summer volunteer hours. Energy is open to teens in grades 9-12. Applicants do not have to be residents of Homer Township. The deadline for applications is February 16, 2009.

The Homer Library is partnering with the Chicago Wolves Professional Hockey Team for our annual Winter Reading Program! Senior Tax Assistance -- Wednesday, February 3rd from 9am-noon
The AARP and the Senior Services Center of Will County will be providing free tax services at the Homer Library. Please bring the following items: photo ID, proof of social security number & dependent, all income statements, all deductions to be claimed, last years federal and state returns, and your property pin number. First come, first served, on a walk-in basis only. Can't make it? Tax Assistance days will also be held on February 17th, March 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st, April 7th, and 14th.

Mystery Book Discussion -- Monday, February 8th at 7pm
Join us for a discussion of Pleasing the Dead by Deborah Turrell Atkinson! New members are welcome and books are available at the library for check out.

Crazy About Cakes -- Tuesday, February 9th at 7pm
Special occasions from memory often include celebration cakes. In this hour long program, audience members will learn about the history of special cakes including red velvet, carrot cake, brand name favorites, and styles of wedding cake. From February 1st - 13th, patrons can visit the Bookmobile to vote for your favorite Monarch, Caudill, or Lincoln book. Kids can also play the exciting Caudill "Memory" game!

Winter Reading Program
The Homer Library is partnering with the Chicago Wolves Professional Hockey Team for our annual Winter Reading Program! Participants will earn chances to win a Chicago Wolves t-shirt, book bag, and other goodies! The more you read, the more chances you get to win! More programs are being added to the schedule for this year's session of Energy: A Teen Leadership Academy! We are excited to have additional programs for Energy teens to attend and we'll be announcing them soon. To apply for Energy, interested teens can pick one up at the library or print one out from home by clicking here. This award-winning academy aims to help create youth leaders who will assume leadership roles throughout the community. Teens will commit to attending three library programs (on topics such as college preparation and communication skills) and fulfill a service requirement at the library. Participation in this academy will look impressive on college applications and resumes, and it's also fun! Energy teens will also get priority regarding summer volunteer hours. Energy is open to teens in grades 9-12. Applicants do not have to be residents of Homer Township. The deadline for applications is February 15, 2009.

Letters to the Troops

Throughout the month of February, the library is collecting letters to send to American troops stationed overseas. Blank forms (for children to use and decorate) are available at the library, although adults are welcome to write letters using their own stationary as well. Taking a few minutes to write a letter can make someone's day a bit brighter! Thank you for participating in this project and supporting our troops.

Applications are now available for the 2010 session of Energy: A Teen Leadership Academy! Interested teens can pick one up at the library or print one out from home by clicking here. Career Assistance Workshop
The library will be holding a Career Assistance Workshop on Saturday, February 20, 2010. The event, which features multiple speakers, will cover topics such as interview and resume preparation, networking skills, government employment opportunities, and job searching. This is an ideal program for those who are unemployed or are interested in transitioning to a new career. Attendees do not have to be residents of Homer Township.
